Lara's story notes V3
[Lara-story-notes3]
10-August-2000

"LARA-notes

1/ Lara is radically changed after Egypt and has given up raiding. She dresses darker and has cut off all ties with friends and colleagues. Her work keeps her closeted in the British Museum. (Is she possibly on medication?)

2/ Something within Lara has hardened leaving her withdrawn and obsessively focused on her work (like Sarah Connor in Terminator 2).

3/ When Von Croy tries to make contact from Paris she refuses to take his calls. His persistence breaks her down and she grudgingly speaks to him. He is clearly in deep trouble but refuses to go into detail over the phone. She is unsympathetic criticising him for getting into something way over his head. They argue. He is clearly terrified.

4/ After slamming the phone down Lara reluctantly decides to go to Paris cursing him all the while.

5/ All of Paris is in turmoil because of the recent outbreak of murders sensationalised by the press as the ‘Return of the Monstrum’. Previous outbreaks of ‘vampire killings’ took place some years ago throughout various European cities.

6/ At his apartment Von Croy is incoherent with fear. The client he is currently working for has him terrified. He suspects he is being stalked, but whether by his chilling boss or some other party he has no idea. He has taken to keeping a loaded gun in the apartment. Again Lara is unsympathetic and launches into Von Croy for getting out of his depth and being a fool. She is still furious at him for leaving her in the tombs in Egypt.

7/ Von Croy can’t even interest Lara in the details of the commission which has shaken him up. When he tries to show her his notes she will have none of it. She starts to leave. He will do anything to get her to stay and presses a piece of paper into her hands..

8/ Whilst they argue Lara is struck down from behind by an unseen intruder. When she comes to either:
  1. She is still in the apartment and Von Croy has been messily murdered
  2. She comes to in a rainswept alley at the back of the apartment.

9/ The police are arriving in force (no explanation why at this stage) and Lara hoofs it to avoid being pressed for explanations she can’t give.

10/ Confused she manages to evade the police and reaches the address on the scrap of paper Von Croy gave her.

11/ There she meets Mme Margot Carvier, a colleague of Von Croy and an art historian/academic at the Louvre.

12/ Lara has to tell her that she is being pursued for Von Croy’s murder.

13/ Lara’s recall of events is muddled. She cannot honestly say she did not kill Von Croy but she knows she is not the Monstrum. And radio reports are calling this another piece of grisly work by the serial killer. Obviously she has been framed. But by whom? And why?

14/ Not confident that protesting her innocence to the police will do any good (especially as she is not sure what did happen at this stage) she decides her best option is to follow the leads left by Von Croy. She has to find out what is at the root of all of this mayhem and clear her name.

15/ A good start is Von Croy’ notebook which Margot Carvier has. Von Croy gave it to Carvier and asked her to pass it on to Lara if anything should happen to him.

16/ Lara takes a lead from the notebook and decides to go to the Louvre where Von Croy was researching a painting for the client who had him so terrified.

17/ But first, Lara needs to get equipped. She didn’t come to Paris expecting action and needs some serious protection, preferably twin 45 calibre protection. And as she won’t be walking through any front doors in plain view for a while she needs stealth equipment.

18/ With the right contacts in the shabbier quarters of Paris anything can be purchased, for the right price. First stop - arms-dealer and sleazebag Louis Bouchard mentioned in the notebook. After that the Louvre."

Paris story outline
[Paris-story-6]

"PARIS – STORY

On the run. Losing the old backpack.
Lara is being pursued by police through the nigh time streets of Paris. She has an address on a scrap of paper, her old backpack and not much else apart from the sovereigns sewn into the lining of her jacket – exchangeable in any country. She evades patrols using stealth, hides out in an abandoned warehouse/apartment block and ends up in a rooftop pursuit by helicopter.

Early on during this pursuit Lara loses her backpack (returned to her in North Africa by Von Croy after Egypt, see notes: ‘Von Croy and Egypt’).

This is the last link with her past. She has to sacrifice it in some ingenious way to escape:
  • Uses it to slide down a cable between two buildings – gets shredded
  • Scoops up police tear gas canisters to throw out of the building
  • Fills with bricks and throws through window to fake her jumping out of building
  • Uses the straps to bind a door closed, then runs
  • Stuffs in a dog’s mouth !?!

Margot Carvier’s apartment.
After evading pursuit on the Paris streets Lara reaches the address on the scrap of paper. Margot Carvier is wary even though she knows Lara is a friend of Von Croy.  Lara has to break the news that Von Croy has been murdered. Carvier puts it together that Lara herself is on the run and the main suspect.

It comes out that Lara has come to Paris because Von Croy asked her for help.  He was getting desperate because of a sinister client named Eckardt who wanted him to find one of the five Obscura Paintings.

Lara becomes evasive when Carvier questions her about Von Croy’s murder.  Her recall of events is hazy. Her memory is fragmented.

Note: we will repeat the flashback at several points throughout the game, revealing a little more as Lara gradually remembers more over time.  Initially deliberately misleading it will show an argument between Lara and Von Croy who is very agitated and has a gun. The exchange terminates in Von Croy’s death.
Lara and Von Croy have argued bitterly, Lara being totally unable to forgive him for abandoning her in Egypt. ( again, see notes: ‘Von Croy and Egypt’)

As the recollections become more detailed we see a violent argument between the two of them.  It will eventually reveal a third figure behind Lara, face a blur. In the final recall Lara can see a reflection of the figure behind her in a wall mirror. It is the faceless figure who kills Von Croy and knocks Lara unconscious to the floor..."

Opening cutscene ideas

"OPENING CUTSCENE IMAGES – suggestions.

1.      Lara in desert headgear and mouth covering. Out-of- focus night time desert in background. Her face is lit by roaring flames from some nearby conflagration. Lights and shadows cross her face as she removes the lower part of her mouth cover to stare fiercely into camera (or out of shot).

2.      The AMULET morphing into the Symbol.

3.      A hand (Lara’s) gripping a torn page. It’s a fax page with M Carvier’s address on it.

4.      The alchemic SYMBOL forged in a brilliantly intense metal. It shimmers like mercury. [The inset symbols in the Obscura Paintings are metal and will be used in the final ritual.]

5.      A fiercely burning ‘something’ out in the night time desert. Could be a single tent, a whole Bedouin encampment, a vehicle or just a vague ‘something’ out of place in the desert.

6.      Like an echo of the Jackal head we glimpse a Nephilim style carved head, part of a statuette in Von Croy’s apartment.

7.      Possibly see Von Croy’s hand, indistinct but seeming to hold a gun and waving it about."

1.1 OPEN WITH CUTSCENE OF INTERWOVEN IMAGES – FLASHBACK #1.
(See chart ‘Flashbacks’.)
Open up on a Jackal headed walking stick, Von Croy’s room badly smashed about, scenes from Egypt, Lara with a mysterious desert Shaman, ugly daubings on a wall, an alchemical symbol. We see the desert Shaman give Lara an Amulet.

1.2 TITLES: ANGEL OF DARKNESS.

1.3 Lara gets chased through dark streets by police, loses her backpack to dogs.

START – PARIS BACKSTREETS

1.4 ESTABLISHING INTRO - Lara has a bloodstained fax with an address, Mme Carvier’s

1.5 A BACKSTREET COURTYARD – THE TRAINING AREA, a dark, angular place of rainswept shadows. All exits from the courtyard are ‘locked.’
Lara talks herself through the training ‘practice’ opportunities in the courtyard and can use the amulet. Whenever Lara succeeds in some new task her voice merges with that of the Shaman as she acknowledges her upgrade. She can also pick up a variety of valuable items that can later be pawned for cash.

1.16b She gets out of the courtyard and is chased by police into an apartment and up onto the rooftops.
  • Over the Police shortwave we hear Lara is a murder suspect.
  • All she has is a name and address on a piece of torn, bloodstained fax sheet, which has part of a symbol on it.
  • She is not armed.
  • Possibly see a newspaper or news poster with the word MONSTRUM amongst other French chatter.

1.22 CARVIER’S APARTMENT
  • Lara makes her way to the address on the torn fax.
  • tells Carvier that Von Croy is dead.
  • Carvier says the Monstrum serial killer has everyone in Paris terrified.
  • Lara has no clear recall of events at Von Croy’s – fragmented images.
  • Carvier says Von Croy was fearful because of a 15th century Obscura Painting he was tracing for a sinister client called Eckhardt.
  • Lara has to trick or persuade Carvier out of the notebook then run for it.

2.1 DESERTED RAILWAY SIDING. A derelict railway carriage. Lara reads VON CROY’S NOTEBOOK. It mentions:
  • the name of the client who is after the   Painting - Eckhardt.
  • The Louvre – where an Obscura Painting might be.
  • Louis Bouchard – a Parisian gangster.
  • Von Croy buying a gun for self protection.
  • Pages of odd archaic symbols including the detail that one crucially potent symbol is hidden beneath the Obscura Painting’s surface.
  • A second Obscura Painting found in Prague by a Mathias Vasiley.

**LARA ADDS HER OWN NOTES TO VON CROY’S NOTEBOOK** She can refer to this throughout the game. On occasion we can hear her read from it..."
